Yes, Killdeer do not build a nest. Rather, they just lay their eggs in a shallow depression on the ground without a true nest. The egg is shaped like that so that it does not roll away since there is no nest.
I have killdeer nesting my my meadow, but have never imposed myself into their space to inspect their nests (or lack thereof). Thanks for the peek! ~karen
what a strange pointy egg. I have never seem one before.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly shaped egg.
ReplyDeleteIs it supposed be on the ground like that, i.e., instead of a nest?

Wow, is that really how the killdeer nest looks? Neat sighting!
ReplyDeletedoesn't look like a very comfortable nest.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing they survive.
ReplyDeleteA few weeks ago I got to see a Killdeer so called nest for the first time. I was amazed at how the eggs blended into the ground.
